This post is to share the map of the reconstructed Zaporizhian Sich. It shows the main objects with explanation of what those objects are. This “bird-eye” view can be found near the entrance to the reconstruction on the large banner. I have captured it and now you may review it. The translation of the text on the banner you may find just under it.
Zaporizhian Sich Plan
Legend of the map.
This reconstruction is a common image of cossacks’ capital city keeping the main buildings which can be found in every Sich. Its square is 3.5ha, its length is 182m and width is 87m. The reconstruction consists of two parts: the Fortress and the Trading and Manufacturing Suburb
Hasan-Basha – the Trading and Manufacturing Suburb:
Zaporizhian Sich was built as a fortress in which cossacks lived. It had all needed for a life within. Here you may see the central square of Zaporizhian Sich. This square was used for meetings and discussions. The noticeable building is the wooden church.
Zaporizhian Sich was a fortress serving to protect the territory from the Tatars intrusions. It had cannons that were protecting the river pass. In the current reconstruction there are a few cannons to reproduce the feeling of that period.
The image was created merging 2 photos with different exposure. I used Photoshop function Align Layers to position images (that were uploaded as layers) and then I hid the parts of image using Masks. This technique can be used instead of HDR. Sometime this produces better results.
Going through Zaporizhzhia I made a few photos of Holy Protection Cathedral (Свято-Покровский собор) that was built not so long ago. The first church on this place was built at 1778 and it was made of wood. In 1886, instead of the woody church building of the new stone cathedral was started that was destroyed by Bolsheviks in 30th of XX centure. The re-building of the cathedral has been started at 1993 and was longed for 14 years. This new cathedral is a copy of an old stone cathedral. Its height is 36m and it is the main cathedral of the city.
