This post is to share the HDR photo made inside the Kiev funicular station. The HDR is made of 2 sets of 3 images of ±2EV and then merged to the single photo.
The funicular connects Uppertown and Podil. It was built during 1902-1905. The funicular was the project of Arthur Abrahamson, the engineer worked on railroads of Zürich, Switzerland and Saint Petersburg, Russia. The station vestibules were designed by N. Piatnitskiy.
The first name of the funicular was Mikhailivs’kyi Mechanichnyi Pidyom (that means Michael’s Mechanical Lifting) because of the St. Michael’s Cathedral which was located not too far. After the cathedral was blown up by Soviets the name of the funicular was changed.
Church Of The Icon Of The Mother Of God Recovery Of Fallen
This article is about two things. The 1st thing is the church and the 2nd one is how I made the photos of it.
The idea to build the church was proposed by the veterans who participated in local wars in 2007. The church was built in the name of the Evgeniy, the soldier who died in Chechnya refusing changing his religion to Islam. Then this church was renamed in the name of the icon of the Mother of God “Recovery of Fallen”.
The photos of this church are HDR photos made hand-held. Most interesting is the photo of the interior of the church. This is a vertorama made using 18mm lens with ISO400 with bracketing shots.
This time the new approach was used: I made a nose reduction before merging to HDR and then one more time after merging and tone-mapping. Vertorama was merged in Photoshop CS5. Then the postprocessing using a few layers was applied.
Interior Of Church Of The Icon Of The Mother Of God Recovery Of Fallen
The Holly-Trinity Cathedral in Kharkov, as it is now, was built in 1861. But on its place there was a church (1764) and then a cathedral that was rebuilt later. This Cathedral was one of the richest cathedral in Kharkiv.
At my visit to the Cathedral I found it a bit dark and very quiet. I didn’t meet any priest there and only a few people.
Here is a photo of the Holly-Trinity Cathedral from the street:

And this is the HDR image of the Holly-Trinity Cathedral interior. The image was merged using 2 hand-held photos using ISO 1600 as the Cathedral is very dark inside.
Going through Zaporizhzhia I made a few photos of Holy Protection Cathedral (Свято-Покровский собор) that was built not so long ago. The first church on this place was built at 1778 and it was made of wood. In 1886, instead of the woody church building of the new stone cathedral was started that was destroyed by Bolsheviks in 30th of XX centure. The re-building of the cathedral has been started at 1993 and was longed for 14 years. This new cathedral is a copy of an old stone cathedral. Its height is 36m and it is the main cathedral of the city.
