At the next day we came to Santorini we raising to the roof of our apartment -Casa Bianca that is in Imerovigli. This was the time of sunset (the best time for Santorini). Here I’m sharing a view we saw standing at the roof. The whether was windy and it was hard to make very sharp image therefore some parts of the panorama is a bit blurred.
On this photo you may see islands Nea Kameni and Thirassia as well as Skaros rock.
In my previous posts I was telling a few words about Nea Kameni and Skaros. And here is a short story about Thirassia island.
Thirassia island is the island located closely to Santorini and years ago it was actually a part of it. But after the volcano eruption in 1500 BC it became a separate island that is untouched by the civilization till our times. It has only 150 permanent inhabitants.
The panorama consists of 5 images merged in Photoshop CS5.
This photo displays a view on the Santorini volcano (Ηφαίστειο Σαντορίνης) and the Skaros rock.
There is a rock in front of Imerovigli village named Skaros. This rock was one of the five fortified settlements on Santorini and was the capital until 18th century. It had a Venetian Castle built in 1207 by Marco Sanudo, the ruler of all Cyclades islands that time. Today there are just a few ruins and the small church on this rock.
The Santorini volcano is located on the small island Nea Kameni (Νέα Καμένη Θήρας). This volcano was the greatest volcano in the ancient world. Its eruption destroyed Minoan civilization 3000 years ago and its ash was found even on Australia. The latest eruption of the Santorini volcano occurred in 1956 but it was not so large. Today the volcano is active but it is not dangerous (as scientists say).
Traveling to Santorini we knew that sunsets at Oia village are most famous sunsets in the world. Oia’s sunsets are the world brand. And we decided to check this out.
We have found the place that is usually used to make photos at the sunset. And I think that the sunset is not so great as it is promoted. The Oia is very crowded and I had to make my shots raising the camera over the crowd.
Fira (Φηρά) is the capital of Santorini island. The name of this city comes from the ancient name of the island Thira. Fira is built on the edge of the 400 m high cliff on the western edge of the island.
Fira is located in 30 mins walk from the village where we rented our apartment, Imerovigli. The city is amazing at every time of day but it is especially fairy at night.
